In a similar vein to that drawing on ergotism, I did some research into plants and witchcraft. Without getting too long winded about it, yes, there was medieval witchcraft, and no, it wasn’t really about Satan or drinking babies blood. A number of wildly psychoactive plants were used, along with ritual, to “travel” to a Sabbath, because witches were essentially not worshiping god, they were labeled Satanic, and hunted.
The plants are almost all from the family Solanaceae, nightshades, which includes potatoes, tobacco, eggplant and tomatoes. The plants contained intense alkaloids, some of which are still used in medicine today, and some of the plants themselves are still used by pagans or in Ayurvedic medicine. While these plants have been of use to humans throughout time, they are all toxic, some deadly so. Please do not use these plants! – I totally wash my hands of this.
